- Is Your Home Rainwater Ready?
As we live in Ireland we should surely be prepared for rain all year round but, at this time of year, as Autumn really starts to settle, it makes sense to take a bit of caution in carefully checking that our homes will withstand the extra rain we are undoubtedly going to receive over the next few months.
When was the last time you checked the roof of your house?
Your roof is your shelter from the rain. If it is possible, take a walk around outside and scan the roof to see if you can notice any loose or missing tiles. Going up onto the roof will allow for a closer inspection. If you notice anything that is not as it should be now would be the time to call someone out to fix it.
Your interior roof can also show you if you have a leak. You may notice something inside that you could not see outside. Look for discolouration, water marks and mold.
Are your doors and windows thoroughly sealed?
Not only will wear and tear and holes in door and window frames let in cold and draughts but they will let in water.
Seal frames with caulking or draught excluder seals.
With your house sealed and secure you need to be sure that rainwater has a clear drainage path.
Are your gutters clean and undamaged?
Any debris or blockages or holes in your guttering can prevent proper drainage leading to water build up or leaks. This can cause erosion of the building, mold and internal leaks. Checking that the gutters are in sound condition and removing leaves and any rubble will ensure the natural drainage of rainwater.
With the extreme weather we have seen in recent years, for most of us we should now be considering protecting our home from rising water as well as falling rainwater.
Flood waters are now a part of the winter season for many of us.
Check for holes or cracks in your foundation.
Air bricks and vents leave a clear path for flood water to enter you home. Flood guard covers can be used on external air bricks. External flood doors and flood guards can also be fitted to external doors.
Altogether this may seem like some serious damage control.
But the extra time you take now may allow for you a more peaceful winter season.
