  2. For best sunlight, position the ridge east to west so the longest side faces south. With small or nearly square greenhouses, orientation is less critical, just aim for a south or southwest-facing side. Even if ideal positioning isn’t possible, direct sunlight on the roof will still provide good warmth.

  3. Also consider practical needs like access to water and electricity for heaters or propagators. In exposed gardens, use hedges, walls, or fences for wind protection, and avoid placing the greenhouse under overhanging trees to prevent damage.

2.Do I Need a Base for My Greenhouse?

Yes, a solid base is essential to support the greenhouse frame and keep it secure against wind and ground movement.
A base may cover the entire floor area, but more commonly it acts like a “frame” around the perimeter, leaving the centre open for planting directly into the soil.

Base Options

  • Concrete blocks laid on a sand and cement foundation are a common choice. Standard blocks can raise the greenhouse by around 9 inches, though they can be set lower in a trench if needed.

  • Bricks (concrete stock or red brick) are often more practical, typically raising the height by just 3–4 inches and allowing a neater finish at ground level.

  • Metal bases can be fixed directly onto any solid, level surface such as concrete or paving using expanding bolts, with the greenhouse frame secured on top.

  • Whatever option you choose, the base must be level, solid, and firmly fixed. Proper installation ensures your greenhouse remains stable, safe, and long-lasting.

3.Which Glass Should I Choose for My Greenhouse?

One of the most common questions we’re asked is about the difference between the glass options supplied with a greenhouse. Horticultural Glass

This is the standard and most affordable option. It’s ideal for greenhouses located in sheltered areas, especially where there’s no risk of children playing nearby.

Safety (Toughened) Glass

A stronger, heavier option that’s better suited to exposed locations. If broken, it shatters into small, harmless pieces rather than sharp shards. It’s clear like standard glass but offers greater durability and improved wind resistance. 

Polycarbonate

Extremely strong and virtually unbreakable, polycarbonate is like plastic. It’s lightweight, so it performs best in sheltered spots. While very durable, it is slightly opaque and not as clear as glass.

Choosing the right glazing depends on your garden’s location, exposure to wind, and safety considerations.

4.Can I Install It Myself?

While it is possible to install a greenhouse yourself, we strongly recommend using a professional installer. Greenhouse assembly can be more technical and time-consuming than it first appears, and it requires at least two people to ensure the frame is level, secure, and properly glazed. Incorrect installation can affect the stability, safety, and longevity of your greenhouse.
