How to use oxalic acid for wood bleaching:

1. Make up a solution of approximately 2oz in a pint of warm water (56.7g in .56l)

2. Sponge over the whole of the surface (which has been stripped of any kind of finish) and allow to dry thoroughly.

3. Once dry, you may find a whitish deposit on the surface; this is the crystals of oxalic acid, which can be brushed off (wear a mask to avoid inhaling the crystals)

4. Residual acid in the wood has to be neutralised with a solution of 1ox Borax in a pint of warm water (28.35g in .56l), sponged on and allowed to dry

5. Afterwards, the surface will be a little fuzzy, due to raised grain, so give a very light sand before staining and finishing.

For use in beekeeping: Oxalic acid is a useful tool for beekeepers to keep Varroa levels under control. It is the best tool to use when colonies are broodless. It can be applied to new packages and is often used with success to clean up mites in the fall after bees have stopped brood rearing.
