Mylands Whiting Powder - 500g
Whiting powder is a very finely ground calcium carbonate — the same mineral as chalk and limestone. It has a broad range of traditional trade and craft uses, and Mylands is a well-regarded supplier of specialist decorating and finishing materials. The fine particle size gives it a mildly abrasive quality that makes it useful for cleaning and polishing without harsh scratching.
Its most common trade use is cleaning glass after putty glazing: once linseed oil putty has been applied to a window frame, a dusting of whiting brushed over the glass absorbs the excess linseed oil that migrates onto the pane, making it easy to clean the glass cleanly without smearing. It is also used to polish stainless steel, marble, glass, silverware, copper and other non-ferrous metals to a bright finish. As a paint additive, it extends coverage, increases body and can be used to thicken or matt down paint. Mixed with linseed oil it can be used to make traditional glazing putty from scratch.
